Ford Transit Towing Capacity Chart: By Model, Length, and Roof Height
The short answer: a properly equipped Transit tows up to 6,900 lbs with the EcoBoost V6 and the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, or about 4,500 lbs without them. Roof height and body length barely move that number. Here is what actually does.
What Actually Decides a Transit's Tow Rating
Most people arriving at this question expect a grid: this roof, this length, this many pounds. The Transit does not work that way, and knowing why will save you from ordering the wrong van.
Two things set the tow rating. The engine, and whether the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package is fitted. That is essentially it. The 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 with the tow package reaches the published maximum of 6,900 lbs. The standard 3.5L PFDi V6 without it sits near 4,500 lbs.
Roof height and body length do something different. They decide how much you can carry inside, and they add weight to the van itself. That weight comes out of your usable margin rather than adding to it.
The Chart: Engine and Tow Package
| Engine | Output | Trailer Tow Package | Max Towing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5L PFDi V6 (standard) |
275 hp | Not fitted | About 4,500 lbs |
| 3.5L PFDi V6 (standard) |
275 hp | Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow | Between the two figures. Confirm the exact build. |
| 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (twin-turbo, available) |
300 hp / 400 lb-ft | Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow | Up to 6,900 lbs |
Transit towing, engine and tow package
The Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package is not a badge. It adds a frame-mounted hitch receiver, trailer wiring provisions and connector, and the cooling and electrical capacity a heavy trailer needs. Tow and haul mode and an available trailer brake controller come with it. Without the package the van is not rated for the top figure no matter which engine is under the hood, and it has to be ordered with the vehicle.
Where Roof Height and Length Really Matter
They matter enormously, just not on the tow line. Here is where the roof and length choices actually show up.
| Roof | Interior Cargo Height | Exterior Overall Height | Effect on Towing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Roof | 56.9 in | 83.2 in | Lightest body, so the most weight headroom left |
| Medium Roof | 72.0 in | 100.8 in | No rating change, slightly more van weight |
| High Roof | 81.5 in | 110.1 in | No rating change, most van weight and most wind area |
Length works the same way. The Transit is offered on 130-inch and 148-inch wheelbases, with an Extended Length body available on the 148-inch. Cargo volume climbs from 246.7 cubic feet at the small end to 487.3 cubic feet on a High Roof Extended Length. So does the weight of the van.
There is one real-world towing effect worth naming. A High Roof Extended Length van has a lot of side area, and towing a trailer with a tall van in crosswind on I-24 is a different experience from towing with a Low Roof. It is not a rating issue, it is a driving one, and crews notice it.
Full dimensions, including door openings and the width between the wheel wells, are in our Transit high roof height and interior dimensions guide.
Back to topPayload, GVWR, and the Number Under the Tow Rating
For most Transit fleets, payload is the binding constraint long before tow rating is.
Maximum payload reaches 5,103 lbs on a properly equipped Transit 350 HD dual rear wheel, Extended Length, High Roof with the EcoBoost V6 at the 11,000 lb GVWR rating. GVWR across the lineup runs from 8,550 lbs on a Transit 150 to 11,000 lbs on a Transit 350 HD. A Transit 350 Passenger Wagon carries up to about 3,401 lbs, less because the seats are already using some of it.
Then subtract reality. Shelving, a partition, a ladder or pipe rack, a full parts inventory, two people and a tank of fuel. And trailer tongue weight counts against payload too, which is the connection people miss: hitching a trailer uses up carrying capacity before you load a single thing in the van.
Transit or Super Duty for Towing
Worth being blunt about, because getting this wrong is expensive.
A Transit is the right answer when the load lives inside the van and the trailer is occasional and light. A small equipment trailer, a landscape trailer, a utility trailer. Under about 6,900 lbs properly equipped, and comfortably under it for daily work rather than right at the number.
If towing is the main job, step up. An F-250 Super Duty starts well above where the Transit tops out, and an F-350 reaches up to 28,000 lbs conventional and 38,000 lbs on a gooseneck when properly equipped. The full breakdown is in our F-350 towing capacity chart.
Running a van at the edge of its rating every day is how fleets end up replacing vehicles early. If your heaviest regular tow is close to 6,900 lbs, you want a truck, not a bigger van.
Back to topFinding the Real Rating for Your Van
- Door jamb sticker. GVWR and axle ratings for that specific van as built. This is the document that matters, not a brochure.
- GCWR. Gross Combined Weight Rating covers van and trailer together, including fuel, passengers, cargo and tongue weight. Tow rating comes out of it after the van's own weight.
- The Ford Towing Guide. Ford publishes ratings per model year broken out by configuration. That is the authority for a specific build.
- A certified scale. Weigh the van loaded as it actually works, with the trailer attached. Most operators have never done it and most are surprised.
Bring us a VIN or a build sheet and our Ford Pro team will pull the real ratings rather than quoting a range. We are at 2655 Trenton Road in Clarksville, minutes off I-24 and about 20 minutes from Fort Campbell. Reference specifications are on the Ford Transit specifications page.
Back to topFrequently Asked Questions
How much can a Ford Transit tow?
A properly equipped Ford Transit tows up to 6,900 lbs with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. With the standard 3.5L PFDi V6 and no tow package, the figure is closer to 4,500 lbs. The gap between those two numbers is roughly 2,400 lbs, which is the difference between pulling a loaded equipment trailer and not.
Does roof height change a Ford Transit's towing capacity?
Not directly. Tow rating on the Transit is set by engine and by whether the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package is fitted, not by roof height. What roof height does change is weight: a High Roof van weighs more than a Low Roof, so it eats into payload and into the combined weight headroom you have left. Pick the roof for the work being done inside the van, then pick the engine and tow package for the trailer.
Does a longer Transit tow more?
No, and this surprises people. The published maximum of 6,900 lbs is achieved on the 130-inch wheelbase, which is the shortest Transit. A longer or Extended Length van carries more cargo but weighs more itself, which works against the combined rating rather than for it. If towing is the priority, do not assume the biggest van is the answer.
What is in the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package?
It adds the hardware needed to reach the maximum rating: a frame-mounted hitch receiver, trailer wiring provisions and connector, and the cooling and electrical capacity to support a heavy trailer. Tow and haul mode and an available trailer brake controller go with it. Without the package the van is not rated for the top figure regardless of engine, so it has to be ordered with the vehicle rather than added later on a whim.
How much payload does a Ford Transit have?
Maximum payload reaches 5,103 lbs on a properly equipped Transit 350 HD dual rear wheel, Extended Length, High Roof with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 at the 11,000 lb GVWR rating. GVWR across the lineup runs from 8,550 lbs on a Transit 150 to 11,000 lbs on a Transit 350 HD. The Transit 350 Passenger Wagon carries up to about 3,401 lbs. Shelving, racks and a stocked parts inventory all come out of that number.
Should I tow with a Transit or step up to a Super Duty?
Use a Transit when the load lives inside the van and the trailer is occasional and light. Step to an F-250 or F-350 when towing is the main job, because even the F-250 starts well above where the Transit tops out. Trying to make a van do a truck's towing work is how fleets end up replacing vehicles early. Call our Ford Pro team at (931) 538-3494 and we will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on.
Does all-wheel drive change what a Transit can tow?
Intelligent AWD improves traction getting a loaded trailer moving on wet grass, gravel or a slick ramp, which matters on Clarksville job sites and unpaved access. It does not raise the tow rating, and the AWD hardware adds weight that comes out of payload. Order it for traction and confidence, not for capacity, and expect roughly 4,200 dollars on the build.
How do I find the real tow rating for my Transit?
Check the door jamb sticker for GVWR and axle ratings, then look up the exact build in the Ford Towing Guide for that model year. The figure that matters is the Gross Combined Weight Rating, which covers van and trailer together including fuel, passengers, cargo and tongue weight. Bring us a VIN or a build sheet and our commercial team will pull the ratings for that specific van rather than quoting a range.
All towing, payload and cargo figures on this page are maximums for a properly equipped vehicle and vary by model, wheelbase, body length, roof height, engine, drivetrain and installed equipment. The Transit is exempt from EPA fuel economy labeling as a commercial vehicle, so no mpg rating is published. Confirm ratings for a specific configuration against the Ford Towing Guide and the vehicle's door jamb sticker before towing.
