Which Ford Transit Configurations Come With a V8?

The short answer: none of them. Every current Ford Transit, from the Cargo Van to the Chassis Cab, runs a 3.5L V6 or the all-electric E-Transit motor. If you want a V8 in a Ford van, the E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis carry a standard 7.3L V8.

Transit Engines by Configuration

No Ford Transit configuration comes with a V8. Ford builds the 2026 Transit in five gas body styles plus the E-Transit, and every one runs a V6 or an electric motor. Here is the full lineup.

What the two V6 engines make

  • 3.5L PFDi V6: 275 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, naturally aspirated. Standard on most Transits.
  • 3.5L EcoBoost V6: 300 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm, twin-turbocharged. Optional on every body style, standard on the heaviest T-350HD builds.
  • E-Transit: 266 hp and 317 lb-ft from a single electric motor.

The PFDi is the standard engine on most builds. On the heaviest T-350HD dual rear wheel builds, the EcoBoost is the only engine offered. Both gas engines use a 10-speed automatic, and both come with rear-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The 2027 Transit keeps the same two V6 engines. Has the Transit Ever Had a V8?

No. The Transit arrived in the U.S. for the 2015 model year, and no U.S. Transit has offered a V8 since. Ford's own towing guides show every engine it has carried.

The diesel is worth a note because people ask about it too. The U.S. Transit has not offered a diesel since the 2019 model year. The smaller Transit Connect never had a V8 either. It ran four-cylinder engines and is no longer sold here.

If you remember a Ford van with a V8, it was almost certainly an E-Series, the van many people still call the Econoline. Ford's 2015 towing guide lists the E-Series with a 5.4L V8 and a 6.8L V10. That lineage is still on sale, and it still has a V8.

The Ford Vans That Do Have a V8

A Ford van platform with a V8 does exist. It just is not called Transit. These are the Ford commercial chassis that carry a gas V8 today, and our commercial team sells all of them.

In the E-Series, the 7.3L V8 makes 325 hp and 450 lb-ft in its standard Premium tune, paired with a six-speed automatic. An Economy-rated calibration of the same engine makes 300 hp and 425 lb-ft for fleets that want to save fuel. The 7.3L replaced the E-Series' old 6.8L V10 and 6.2L V8 for the 2021 model year.

One honest limit: Ford sells the E-Series as a cutaway and a stripped chassis, not as a factory enclosed cargo van. The enclosed box comes from an upfitter. If you want to see finished E-Series service vans, start with our service utility van inventory.

Transit V6 or E-Series V8 for Your Work

Most buyers who ask for a V8 are really asking for torque and towing. So compare the numbers, not the cylinder count.

Torque figures are Ford's SAE ratings. Towing figures are maximums when properly equipped: the Transit numbers are for the Cargo Van, and the E-Series number is Ford's published cutaway maximum. The E-Transit is left out of the towing bars because its rating depends on configuration.

The EcoBoost V6 reaches its 400 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm, well below where the V8 peaks. For a loaded van pulling up the hills out of the Cumberland River valley in Clarksville, that low-rpm pull is what you feel. The Transit also carries up to 5,103 lbs of payload in a T-350HD.

The E-Series wins when the job is heavy and the body is custom. It tows up to 10,000 lbs and rates up to 14,500 lbs GVWR, which is why so many box trucks, shuttle buses and ambulances are built on it.

  • Choose the Transit for an enclosed van you can stand up in, parcel and trade work, 12 and 15 passenger shuttles, or anything that lives on I-24 and in town. Browse Transit cargo vans or Transit passenger vans.
  • Choose the E-Series for a cutaway box truck, a service utility body, a bus body, or towing past what a Transit is rated for.
  • Ask about both if you are specifying a new fleet. We can quote each one with your upfit and commercial financing side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Ford Transit come with a V8?

No. Every current Ford Transit configuration, including the Cargo Van, Passenger Van, Cutaway and Chassis Cab, uses a 3.5L V6 or the E-Transit electric motor. Ford's V8 van platform is the E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis, which carry a standard 7.3L V8.

What engine is in the Ford Transit?

The standard engine is a 3.5L PFDi V6 with 275 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The available 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 makes 300 hp and 400 lb-ft, and it is standard on the heaviest T-350HD builds. Both use a 10-speed automatic.

Did the Ford Transit ever have a V8?

No U.S. Transit has had a V8. From 2015 to 2019 it offered a 3.7L V6, the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and a 3.2L Power Stroke five-cylinder diesel. Since 2020 it has offered the 3.5L PFDi V6 and the 3.5L EcoBoost V6.

Which Ford van has a V8?

The Ford E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis, in E-350 and E-450 form, come with a standard 7.3L V8 rated at 325 hp and 450 lb-ft. The F-59 stripped chassis also uses a 7.3L V8. Van bodies built on the Super Duty chassis cab can use the 7.3L gas V8 or the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel V8.

Is the Transit EcoBoost V6 as strong as a V8?

It makes 400 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm, against 450 lb-ft at 3,750 rpm from the E-Series 7.3L V8. The EcoBoost delivers its pull lower in the rev range, which suits a loaded van. The V8 E-Series still tows more, up to 10,000 lbs against 6,900 lbs for a Transit Cargo Van.

Can I get a Ford Transit with a diesel engine?

Not a new one in the U.S. The Transit has not offered a diesel here since the 2019 model year, when the 3.2L Power Stroke five-cylinder was dropped. Current Transits are gas V6 or all-electric.

What powers the E-Transit?

A single electric motor rated at 266 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, fed by an 89 kWh battery. It has no gas engine at all. See the details on our E-Transit page or call our Ford Pro team.

Should my Clarksville business buy a Transit or an E-Series?

Buy a Transit for an enclosed cargo van, a passenger shuttle or daily trade work around Clarksville and Fort Campbell. Buy an E-Series for a cutaway box truck, a bus body or heavier towing. Call our Ford Pro team at (931) 538-3494 and we will spec both against your upfit.

Engine outputs are Ford SAE ratings. Towing, payload and GVWR figures are maximums for a properly equipped vehicle and vary with body style, wheelbase, roof height, axle ratio, drivetrain and installed equipment. Confirm the ratings for a specific vehicle against Ford documentation and its door jamb label. Learn more about the E-Transit.
