Ford F-250 Towing Capacity Chart: Super Duty Work Truck Towing Guide

The short answer: a properly equipped Ford F-250 tows up to 22,000 lbs with a conventional hitch and up to 23,000 lbs with a gooseneck. Both need the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and Ford's High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package. A gas F-250 tops out at 18,200 lbs conventional.

F-250 Towing Capacity by Engine

The F-250 towing capacity chart starts with the engine, because the engine sets the ceiling. Every other box on the order sheet moves you down from it. The figures below come straight from Ford's 2026 Super Duty towing guide and show each engine at its best configuration.

Ford F-250 Super Duty maximum loaded trailer weight by engine, 2026 model year, when properly equipped. Each figure is the best configuration for that engine, not a rating every truck carries.

6.7L High-Output Power Stroke diesel V8 500 hp / 1,200 lb-ft 22,000 lbs 22,300 lbs 23,000 lbs

Both diesel figures above require the High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package. The gas figures come from the 4.30 rear axle ratio, which is the best towing axle Ford offers with either gas V8.

The Package Behind the 22,000 lb Rating

A diesel engine alone does not get an F-250 to 22,000 lbs. Ford's towing guide ties every diesel figure above 18,200 lbs to one option: the F-250 High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package, order code 535.

That package raises the truck's gross combined weight rating to 30,000 lbs on the standard diesel and 31,000 lbs on the high-output diesel. It also lifts the F-250's GVWR to as much as 11,400 lbs.

Skip it and the numbers drop hard. A 6.7L diesel F-250 on the standard 23,500 lb GCWR tops out at 16,600 lbs conventional. That is less than a 7.3L gas truck on the 4.30 axle.

Ford's own rule: conventional towing above 18,200 lbs requires the High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package, and Ford warns the New Vehicle Limited Warranty may be voided if you tow above that without it. If your trailer is heavier than 18,200 lbs, check the build sheet for code 535 before you hitch up.

Why the Same Engine Tows Different Amounts

Here is the part most towing charts skip. The truck with the best conventional rating is not the truck with the best gooseneck rating. On the high-output diesel with the axle package, the numbers move like this:

Crew Cab 4x4, 176.0 in8 ft22,000 lbs19,800 lbs20,800 lbs

The lightest truck, a Regular Cab 4x2, carries the best fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings. A heavier cab eats into the combined weight rating, and that comes straight off what you can pull in the bed.

The conventional column runs the other way, peaking at 22,000 lbs on the four-wheel-drive SuperCab and Crew Cab. So decide which hitch you will actually use before you choose a cab. A Clarksville crew that runs a bumper-pull equipment trailer and a farm that pulls a gooseneck stock trailer should not order the same truck.

Conventional, Fifth-Wheel or Gooseneck

Yes, an F-250 can pull a gooseneck or a fifth-wheel. Ford rates it for both, and the gooseneck rating is the highest number the F-250 carries. Here is how the three hitch types compare on this truck.

  • Conventional. A ball or pintle on the rear receiver. Every F-250 comes with a 2.5 in receiver, rated by Ford for 22,000 lbs of trailer and 2,200 lbs of tongue weight. Ford rates weight-carrying and weight-distributing hitches the same on the F-250.
  • Fifth-wheel. A pin and jaw hitch in the bed, common on campers and flatbed trailers. Top rating is 22,300 lbs. Ford's factory fifth-wheel kit (option 15L) is rated for 20,000 lbs on single rear wheel trucks, which is lower than the truck. Match the hitch to the load, not just the truck.
  • Gooseneck. A ball in the bed over the rear axle, the standard on livestock and equipment trailers. Top rating is 23,000 lbs. Ford sells a factory gooseneck kit (option 15J) and a fifth-wheel and gooseneck prep package (option 53W).

Two more Ford limits apply to every setup. Plan on tongue weight of about 10 percent of the trailer on a conventional hitch and about 15 percent on a fifth-wheel or gooseneck. And keep trailer frontal area under 60 sq ft conventional, or 75 sq ft on a fifth-wheel or gooseneck.

F-250 Payload and Tongue Weight

The highest payload in Ford's 2026 F-250 spec sheet is 4,246 lbs, on a 7.3L gas Regular Cab 4x2. The standard 6.7L diesel peaks at 4,048 lbs. The high-output diesel peaks at 3,918 lbs.

Diesels carry less because the engine weighs more, and payload is what is left of the GVWR after the truck itself. Four-wheel drive, a bigger cab and a longer bed each take another bite before any tools go in.

Then the trailer takes its share. Tongue weight and pin weight count as payload. At 15 percent, a 20,000 lb gooseneck puts about 3,000 lbs on the truck. On a diesel F-250 that leaves well under 1,000 lbs for the driver, a passenger, fuel and a toolbox.

The trap: a crew cab diesel F-250 with a loaded bed can hit its payload limit before it hits its tow rating. The tow number still looks fine on paper. Weigh the truck loaded the way it works, with the trailer on, before you trust the chart.

What Changed for the 2027 F-250

If you are shopping this fall, you will see 2026 and 2027 Super Duty trucks side by side. Here is what changed between them for towing.

  • Two engines are gone. Ford deleted the 6.8L gas V8 and the standard-output 6.7L Power Stroke for 2027. The 7.3L gas V8 is now standard on every trim, and the 6.7L High-Output diesel is the only diesel.
  • The 7.3L is retuned. Ford lists the 2027 7.3L at 420 hp and 445 lb-ft, down from 430 hp and 485 lb-ft. Its F-250 towing ratings in Ford's 2027 guide are unchanged at 18,200 lbs conventional and 19,500 lbs fifth-wheel and gooseneck.
  • The maximums held. Ford's 2027 towing guide keeps the F-250 at 22,000 lbs conventional and 23,000 lbs gooseneck. The fifth-wheel maximum moves from 22,300 to 22,100 lbs.
  • The axle package is still the key. On a 2027 high-output diesel F-250 the High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package becomes an option. A truck ordered without it drops to 16,600 lbs conventional, so check for it on the window sticker.

How to Find the Rating for Your Truck

Every chart online, this one included, shows maximums. Here is how to get the number that applies to one specific F-250.

  • Read the door jamb label. The Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver's door pillar lists GVWR and front and rear axle ratings for that truck as built.
  • Find the GCWR. The combined weight of truck and trailer cannot exceed it. Anything you add to the truck comes off what it can pull.
  • Check the axle ratio and code 535. Two F-250s that look identical can differ by more than 5,000 lbs of towing because of the axle and this one package.
  • Look up the exact build in the Ford towing guide. Ford publishes ratings by engine, axle, cab, drive and wheelbase every model year.
  • Weigh the rig. A certified scale with the truck loaded for work and the trailer attached is the only way to know where you sit.

We will do this with you. Bring a VIN or a build sheet to our Ford Pro team and we will pull the ratings for that truck. Ford's reference documents are the 2026 Super Duty Pickup Towing Guide and the 2026 Super Duty technical specifications.

F-250 or F-350 for a Clarksville Fleet

A properly specced F-250 covers most commercial towing around Montgomery County. Skid steers, mini excavators, landscape trailers and hay wagons all fit inside its ratings. It is also single rear wheel only, so it parks and turns like a pickup on tight residential job sites.

Step up to the F-350 Super Duty when one of three things is true. You need dual rear wheels. You are mounting a service body or crane that eats payload. Or your heaviest gooseneck runs past what an F-250 is rated for. Compare the two trucks trim by trim on our Super Duty trim guide.

Heavier work moves to a Ford Super Duty chassis cab. Bring us the heaviest thing you actually pull, and our commercial team will tell you which class you need. Ask about commercial financing while you are here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can a Ford F-250 tow?

A properly equipped Ford F-250 tows up to 22,000 lbs with a conventional hitch, 22,300 lbs with a fifth-wheel and 23,000 lbs with a gooseneck. Those maximums need the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and the High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package. A gas F-250 tops out at 18,200 lbs conventional and 19,500 lbs gooseneck.

How much can a gas F-250 tow?

The 7.3L gas V8 tows up to 18,200 lbs conventional and 19,500 lbs on a fifth-wheel or gooseneck when properly equipped. The 6.8L gas V8 tows up to 17,300 lbs conventional. Both maximums use the 4.30 rear axle ratio.

Can an F-250 pull a gooseneck trailer?

Yes. Ford rates the F-250 for gooseneck towing up to 23,000 lbs with the 6.7L High-Output diesel, which is its highest rating of any hitch type. Ford offers a factory fifth-wheel and gooseneck prep package and a factory gooseneck hitch kit on the F-250.

What is the F-250 High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package?

It is Ford option code 535. It raises the diesel F-250's combined weight rating to 30,000 or 31,000 lbs and its GVWR to as much as 11,400 lbs. Ford requires it for conventional towing above 18,200 lbs, and a diesel F-250 without it is rated for 16,600 lbs conventional.

What is the maximum payload of a Ford F-250?

Up to 4,246 lbs, on a 7.3L gas Regular Cab 4x2 when properly equipped. Diesel F-250s carry less, up to 4,048 lbs, because the engine weighs more. Trailer tongue weight counts against payload, so a heavy gooseneck can use most of it.

What size hitch receiver does the F-250 have?

Every F-250 gets a 2.5 in receiver as standard. Ford rates it for 22,000 lbs of trailer weight and 2,200 lbs of tongue weight, the same with a weight-carrying or weight-distributing hitch. Tremor-equipped trucks are rated lower, at 18,200 lbs and 1,820 lbs.

Did F-250 towing capacity change for 2027?

The maximums did not. Ford's 2027 guide keeps 22,000 lbs conventional and 23,000 lbs gooseneck, and the fifth-wheel maximum moves to 22,100 lbs. The engine lineup shrank to the 7.3L gas V8 and the 6.7L High-Output diesel.

Is an F-250 or an F-350 better for my Clarksville fleet?

The F-250 handles most equipment and landscape trailers around Montgomery County and is easier to park. Choose the F-350 for dual rear wheels, a heavy service body or crane, or a gooseneck heavier than the F-250 is rated for. Call our Ford Pro team at (931) 538-3494 with your heaviest real load.

All towing and payload figures are maximums for a properly equipped vehicle, with a 150 lb driver and passenger, calculated by Ford using the SAE J2807 method. They vary with cab, bed, engine, drivetrain, axle ratio, option content, cargo and passengers. Combined weight of truck and trailer cannot exceed the GCWR. Confirm the ratings for a specific truck in the Ford Towing Guide and on its door jamb label before towing.
